Cheiloplasty Bullhorn

If nature has not endowed you with beautiful, symmetrical and clear-cut lips, you can amend for it with the help of cheiloplasty. It is plastic surgery that increases or, if need be, reduces the lips and rids one of inborn or acquired defects in this part of the face.

Depending on the purposes, there is reconstructive and esthetic cheiloplasty. In the former case, patients are usually people with inborn or acquired defects. In this surgery, the lip shape is usually completely altered.

Esthetic cheiloplasty implies correction. This manipulation is chosen by clients who dream of changing the shape and volume of this part of the face in order to look more attractive.

Section methods and types

Surgical cheiloplasty methods do not aim to increase the volume. The desired effect is achieved by lifting rather than injection of preparations for increasing the volume and plumpness of this face part.

Bullhorn is plastic surgery of the upper lip and one of the varieties of cheiloplasty. The name of the manipulation stems from “bull’s horn”. Using this manipulation, the effect can be achieved by reducing the distance between the vermilion border and the nose.

It is believed that an ideal distance between the lip and the nose is 12-15 mm. If the anatomic features of the face do not match these parameters, it may look inharmonious and disproportional.

This technique suggests skin excision below the base of the nose. Visually wavy contours of these excisions remind of bullhorns. After this surgery, the distance from the vermillion border to the nose is reduced, thus the upper lip goes up and look more attractive.

Provided adequate anatomic features, the doctor may perform a concealed bullhorn, which almost does not leave a scar. In case of concealed bullhorn, it is not the skin but part of the mucous membrane at the nose base that is excised.

Another popular technique of upper lip lifting is the so-called “seagull wing”. In this technique, the surgeon makes two closing-in excisions along the contour of the upper lip. As a result, the excised zone reminds a seagull’s wing. It adds volume and prominence to the lips.

Indications and contraindications to cheiloplasty

Some people want not only to make lips look more esthetic, but also correct the consequences of injuries and inborn defects. Cheiloplasty can solve any problems. This manipulation may have different objectives:

  • increase the volume;
  • remove asymmetry and disproportion observed in many people;
  • correct the shape;
  • remove small wrinkles that often appear near the upper and lower lips with age;
  • remove a cyst or fibroma in this part of the face;
  • correct inborn defects (cleft lip and cleft palate) and imperfections resulting from injuries.

Just as before any other surgical intervention, the doctor should examine the patient and make tests. Cheiloplasty is not such a simple manipulation as it may seem. The operation is not performed in several cases:

  • pregnancy and lactation period;
  • diabetes mellitus and other serious metabolic disorders;
  • oncological diseases;
  • blood coagulability disorders;
  • chronic diseases and aggravation of herpes;
  • disposition of skin to keloidal and hypertrophic scars.

Operation and rehabilitation period

The rehabilitation period after the plastic surgery may last from 5 days to a week. During the rehabilitation, the patient needs a sparing regimen: no mimic activity, spicy food and sunbaths. Sutures are usually removed on the fifth day.

Provided the professional approach, the scar is almost invisible. Even in case a small scar remains, the anatomic features of the face will surely conceal it. Lightening of the scar to the natural skin color usually takes up to 2 months.

The operation is performed both under sedation and local anesthesia. It depends on the individual characteristics, scope of intervention and doctor’s recommendations.

The operation itself lasts about one to two hours; after the manipulation, specialists do their best to reduce edemas and minimize unpleasant sensations. You can make an appointment with an experienced surgeon at the Diamond Laser clinic in Kyiv right now. He will provide a professional consultation, tell you about the manipulation and answer all your questions.
